Did you know that excess positive ions in your work environment can negatively affect your performance, mental and physical health?

Whether you work indoors or outdoors, you are bound to be over-exposed to these little suckers most of your waking hours. They thrive in environments where electrical equipment, friction, asphalt and concrete, high winds, dust, humidity and pollution are present.

Inhalation of excess positive ions can contribute to:

  • Brain fog (lack of focus, forgetfulness, confusion)Blog 3 photo 3
  • Dyslexic response patterns
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Asthma
  • Respiratory tract problems
  • Weakened immune system

What are positive and negative ions?

An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons do not equal the total number of protons. When an atom or molecule loses a negatively charged electron through atmospheric forces or environmental influences it becomes a positive ion. When it gains a negatively charged electron it becomes a negative ion. Stay with me, it will all make sense in a minute…

How are they generated?

Positive ions can be generated by many things typically found in your work environment:

  • Air-conditioning systems
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Wi-Fi
  • Electrical equipment (e.g. televisions, fridges, dryers)
  • Computer equipment, printers and photocopiers
  • Fibres in carpets, curtains and upholstery
  • Hair dryers
  • Friction (e.g. walking on synthetic carpet, running on a treadmill)
  • Asphalt and concrete
  • High winds, dust, humidity and pollution
  • Stormy weather (before a storm)

Negative ions are found in abundance in nature, forests, beaches, waterfalls and after a thunderstorm. When water drops fracture, it creates negative ions. That is why many of us are so attracted to the beach and waterfalls.

Why do excess positive ions affect my performance and health?

Ions are present in the air that we breathe. For you to be in a balanced state there should be slightly more negative than positive ions in the atmosphere. This is because negative ions have a positive effect on you and positive ions, which can promote inflammation, have a negative effect on your body.

When you inhale more positive than negative ions (which is very likely in your work environment), your body’s polarity can be thrown out of balance. This affects the functional balance between your brain’s two hemispheres and can lead to brain integration problems which may manifest as brain fog, dyslexic response patterns, anxiety, stress, fatigue and irritability.

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you? Can you see how this may affect your work performance, mental and physical health?

In addition to this, the following factors can make you more susceptible to an ionisation imbalance in your body:

  • A deficiency in digestive enzymes, Vitamin B complex or minerals
  • A calcium/potassium ratio imbalance

How do I restore my ionisation balance?

Decrease exposure to positive ions:

  • Switch off electrical equipment when not in use, including Wi-Fi routers
  • Turn devices on airplane mode when possible (mobile phones, tablets etc.)

Regularly expose yourself to negative ions to neutralize the positive ions:

  • Use the ionizer function on air conditioners to create negative ions
  • Use negative ion generators – diffusers, wrist bands, pendants, room or building ionizers
  • Place crystals like amethyst clusters or tourmalines in your work environment
  • Use Himalayan salt lamps
  • Earth yourself – spend 20 minutes a day barefoot on the ground
  • Spend time in nature and next to moving water like the beach or a river

Identify and rectify your body’s deficiencies in enzymes, B vitamins or minerals through Kinesiology techniques and high quality supplements.
